Lulu se enorgullece en presentar la exhibición de la pintora mexicana, residida en Brooklyn Aliza Nisenbaum. Para su primera exposición individual en su país de origen, Nisenbaum muestra una selección de sus más recientes pinturas. Hibridando la tradición francesa fin-de-siecle y el intimismo de post-guerra Norteamericano con un tema no tradicional, decididamente personal, y una paleta galvánica, Nisenbaum hace retratos de latinoamericanos indocumentados “ilegales”, cartas manuscritas, libros, y ramos de flores. Sus obras que son también conocidas por ostentar textiles estampados y superficies exuberantes las cuales están ricamente elaboradas en tonos brillosos, densos; se refieren tanto a la pintura como a lo que representan. En su quehacer, la intimidad de lo pictórico es indisociable de lo que se retrata y cómo se retrata– tête-à-tête, close-ups, a veces cortados, a menudo llenando, pero nunca congestionando el espacio de la pintura. Y sin embargo, a pesar de toda su intimidad y de los significados a través de lo cuales tradicionalmente, si se quiere hasta de manera anacrónica, se hace visible lo retratado –letras, libros y flores- las pinturas de Nisenbaum, no obstante, nunca despiertan dudas sobre la actual posibilidad de lo íntimo, percibiéndolo menos como un hecho de vida que como un modo ético, posible mediante el cada vez más raro acto de prestar atención.
La inauguración estará acompañada por una discusión entre la artista, los fundadores de Lulu, Martin Soto Climent y Chris Sharp, y la artista Melanie Smith. Si el clima lo permite la discusión tomará lugar en la azotea de Lulu a la 1.00 pm.
Un catálogo editado por la curadora Fabiola Iza con un ensayo de Chris Sharp, curador independiente y co-fundador de Lulu, será publicado para esta exposición.
Aliza Nisenbaum (1977, Ciudad de México). Obtuvo su MFA en The School of the Art Institute of Chicago en 2005. Entre sus exhibiciones individuales y en conjunto se encuentran Aliza Nisenbaum and Tadhg McSweeney, Kevin Kavanagh gallery Dublin, Irlanda (2013); Aliza Nisenbaum at Immigrant Movement International, Queens, NYC (2013); Holly Coulis and Aliza Nisenbaum, Susanne Hilberry gallery, Detroit, MI (2013). Lulu is proud to present an exhibition of the Mexican, Brooklyn-based painter Aliza Nisenbaum. For her first solo show in her native country, Nisenbaum exhibits a selection of new and recent paintings. Hybridizing a tradition of French fin-de-siecle and post-war American intimism with a decidedly personal, non-traditional subject matter and galvanic palette, Nisenbaum makes portraits of undocumented “illegal” Latin American immigrants, hand-written letters, books, and bouquets of flowers. Her ornate works, which are also known to feature patterned textiles and lush surfaces, are richly crafted in bright, dense hues. They are as much about painting as what they depict. In what she does, the intimacy of paint is indissociable from the intimacy of what she portrays and how she portrays it– tête-à-tête, close up, some times cropped, often filling up, but never over-crowding the space of the picture. And yet for all their intimacy and the signifiers through which it is traditionally, if anachronistically portrayed– letters, books, and flowers– Nisenbaum paintings’ nevertheless raise doubts about the feasibility of intimacy, perceiving it less as a fact of life than an ethical mode, won through the increasingly rare act of paying attention.
The opening will be accompanied by a discussion between the artist, the founders of Lulu, Martin Soto Climent and Chris Sharp, and the artist Melanie Smith. Weather permitting, the discussion will take place on the roof of Lulu at 1 pm.
A catalog, with an essay by Lulu co-founder Chris Sharp and edited by Fabiola Iza, is also published on the occasion of the exhibition.
