Lulu se complace en presentar una exposición individual de la artista austriaca-ecuatoriana radicada en Viena, Anna Schachinger (n. 1990).
Anna Schachinger es una pintora. Muchas cosas ocurren en sus pinturas. Trabajadas, fuertes, elegantes, desorganizadas, muy destiladas, retadoras y completamente únicas, lo que Anna hace se siente, si no mal comportado, muy poco ortodoxo. No solo cada cuadro es radicalmente diferente a los anteriores, su sujeto se niega a entregarse a las taxonomías tradicionales de abstracción o figuración. La técnica misma también es variada; algunas veces el derivado de un concertado y delicado garabateado, en otros casos el resultado de lo que parece haber sido un proceso verdaderamente brutal. Es como si ella fuese una artista liminal, una pintora de umbrales, o constantemente al borde, pero caracterizarla de esa forma sería sugerir que su obra es ambivalente y carece de orientación estética o convicción, que no es el caso para nada. Interesada en los confines que limitan el medio, sus imágenes abigarradas tratan de superar y colisionar con esos límites y divisiones siempre que sea posible. La belleza y los típicos patrones que componen su obra, son a menudo empujados hasta el punto de demasiada saturación.
Para su exposición en Lulu, se presenta una selección de trabajos de pequeña escala hechos entre 2014 y ahora. A la vez pintorescas, agresivas, hogareñas, magníficas y acogedoras, estas obras respetan y encarnan prácticamente todas las contradicciones que dan vida a su pintura. La heterogeneidad de los motivos, técnicas y materiales, sin mencionar al exceso general, de los que se sirve, existen en un agudo contraste con la consistente y seductora economía de la escala de sus pinturas. Su desenfreno general podría parecer desvirtuar su domesticidad esencial, pero estas pinturas (in)modestas existen para vivir con ellas. Por toda su diferencia e insistencia en estar comprometidas con cada una en sus propios términos, tienen una belleza acumulativa y colectiva. Mientras más las miras individualmente y en conjunto, se vuelven más ricas, más complejas, y finalmente, más pulcras (ningún sinónimo de 'belleza' se siente más adecuado a lo que ella hace en virtud de cómo esta palabra es familiar e inmanejable). Perfectamente reducidas e irreducibles, su encanto de tómame o déjame es inconfundible y no puede pasar desapercibido. Mírame, dicen, soy una pintura. Lidia con ello.
Anna Schachinger (n. 1990) es una artista austriaca-ecuatoriana radicada en Viena. Ha estudiado en el Art Institute of Chicago y en la Academia de Bellas Artes en Viena. Una selección de sus exposiciones individuales incluye: white crocodile en fAN Kunstverein, Viena (2016), y Bed and Breakfast en Ubik Space, Viena (2015). Su trabajo ha formado parte de exposiciones grupales en Husslehof, Frankfurt, Transition Gallery, Londres, Sullivan Galleries, Chicago, y Galerie Kunstbuero, Viena.

Lulu is very pleased to present a solo exhibition of the Austrian-Ecuadorian, Vienna-based artist Anna Schachinger (b. 1990).
Anna Schachinger is a painter. Her paintings have a lot going on. Labored, tough, elegant, messy, highly distilled, challenging, and utterly unique, what she does feels if not poorly behaved, then ungrudgingly unorthodox. Not only is each painting radically different from whatever preceded it, her subject matter refuses to submit to traditional taxonomies of abstraction or figuration. Technique itself also varies; sometimes the byproduct of a concerted and delicate mark making, the work is, at other times, the result of what appears to have been a really brutal process. It’s as if she were a liminal painter, a painter of thresholds, or constantly on the brink, but to characterize her as such might suggest that her work is ambivalent, lacks an aesthetic compass or conviction, which is not the case, at all. Interested in the confines that bound the medium, her motley pictures seek to collide with and exceed those limits and divisions wherever possible. Beauty, and the typically all over patterns which compose it in her work, is often pushed to the point of saturation, of too much.
For her solo at Lulu, she presents a selection of small-scale works made between 2014 and now. At once quaint, aggressive, homely, gorgeous and homey, these works abide by and embody virtually all of the contradictions that animate her painting. The heterogeneity of the motifs, techniques and materials, not to mention the general excess, of which she avails herself exist in sharp contrast to the consistent and beguiling economy of scale of the paintings. Their general unruliness would seem to undermine their essential domesticity, but these (im)modest works are meant to be lived with. For all their difference and insistence on being engaged with each on their own terms, they have a cumulative, collective beauty. The more you look at them individually and together, the richer, more complex, and finally, pulchritudinous they become (no synonym of ‘beauty’ feels more appropriate to what she does by virtue of exactly how homely and unwieldy the word is). Both perfectly reduced and irreducible, their take-me-or-leave-me charm is unmistakable and cannot be dismissed. Look at me, they say. I am a painting. Deal with it.
