Lulu se enorgullece de presentar una exposición individual de la artista radicada en la Ciudad de México, Chelsea Culprit.
Conocida por vibrantes figuras en tacones altos, paleta explosiva y producción multimedia, Culprit toma una aproximación mucho más contenida del componente material para su exhibición en Lulu. La muestra gira en torno a un nuevo cuerpo de trabajo desarrollado durante el verano en la montaña. La exposición ve a la artista desarrollar aún más su vocabulario pictórico específico con una impactante economía material que hace cualquier cosa salvo disminuir el impacto dramático de su trabajo. Utilizando nada más que carbón casero sobre un lienzo sin imprimatura, Culprit crea un mundo natural fantástico habitado por unas quimeras nocturnas aparentemente urbanas o embaucadoras ninfas de madera. Estas figuras enmascaradas y con tacones altos acechan elípticamente, brincan elásticamente y todo menos disolverse en sus alrededores arbóreos, (in)orgánicamente colapsando la frontera entre lo humano y lo no humano en un elegante enredo de líneas. Claramente actuando (una cualidad auxiliada por su escala casi mural), parecen fluctuar entre el querer seducir o aterrar, invitando de manera irresistible al espectador a entrar a su agreste fluidez. A pesar de la simpleza material del trabajo, se retuerce y se agita sin embargo, gracias a la fuerte y confiada forma de hacer trazos de la artista, con una patente opulencia formal y energía febril. Aquí el deseo se convierte en una espléndidamente anudada y extrañamente formada cosa.

Lulu is proud to present a solo exhibition of the Mexico-City based artist Chelsea Culprit.
Known for vibrant high-heeled figures, explosive palette and multimedia production, Culprit is taking a much more reduced approach to the material component of the exhibition at Lulu. The show revolves around a new body of work developed over the summer in a mountain setting. The exhibition sees the artist further developing their specific pictorial vocabulary with a striking material economy which does anything but diminish the dramatic impact of the work. Using nothing more than home-made charcoal on unprimed canvas, Culprit creates a fantastical natural world inhabited by seemingly urban, nocturnal chimeras or trickster wood sprites. These masked, high-heeled figures elliptically lurk, elastically cavort and all but dissolve into their arboreal surroundings, (in)organically collapsing the boundary between the human and non-human in an elegant tangle of lines. Clearly performing (a quality aided by their quasi-mural-sized scale), they seem to fluctuate between wanting to seduce or terrify, irresistibly inviting the viewer to enter their fluid wilderness. Despite the material simplicity of the work, it nevertheless writhes and roils, thanks to the artist’s bold and confident mark making, with a patent formal opulence and feverish energy. Here desire and being become a splendidly knotted and strangely shaped thing.
