Lulu se complace en presentar la exposición River Plate del artista austriaco radicado en Viena, Josef Dabernig.
Conocido por su exploración de la arquitectura brutalista, sistemas sociales post-muro del este de Europa y un humor seco, el trabajo de Josef Dabernig incluye filmes, fotografía, textos, objetos y conceptos relacionados con el espacio. En Lulu presentará el filme River Plate (2013) así como una selección de fotografías en blanco y negro tomadas en el sitio de rodaje para la película. Filmada en Super-16 blanco y negro, grabado en 35mm y transferido a video de alta definición, la corta obra de 16 minutos, muestra a un grupo de gente aparentemente no relacionada, reunida y tomando el sol en un río que carga con los restos dañados de una construcción industrial bajo un puente en una ubicación europea desconocida de apariencia alpina. De acuerdo con el artista; “River Plate muestra una micro-sociedad en una cuerpo-narración fragmentada. Rodillas, hombros, pies y panzas son significantes de la presencia humana articulada, sin revelar nada más, contra un fondo claustrofóbico de cemento, piedra y agua". A la vez irónica, inquietante, y completamente extraña, River Plate, sin embargo, ejerce una sobria calidad lírica que tiene menos que ver con algún tipo de expresividad que con un rigor y una belleza compositivos que gobiernan estrictamente cada toma.
La exposición en Lulu es precedida por una proyección de otros cuatro filmes por el artista y por una conversación entre el curador Eduardo Thomas, Chris Sharp, co-fundador de Lulu y el artista Josef Dabernig. El evento, de entrada libre, se llevará a cabo del 11 de agosto, de 19 a 21 horas en el Cine Tonalá.
Josef Dabernig (n. 1956, Kötschach-Mauthen, Austria) radica y trabaja en Viena. Una selección de sus exposiciones individuales recientes incluye: Wilfried Lentz, Rotterdam (2015); Galería Andreas Huber, Viena (2014); and the extensive survey, Rock the Void, Mumok - museum moderner kunst, stiftung ludwig wien, Vienna (2014). Su trabajo ha sido parte del programa de Manifesta biennial (San Petersburgo, 2014, y Ljubljana, 2000), la Gwangju Biennale (2012), y la Bienal de Venecia (2003 y 2001). Lulu is proud to present the exhibition River Plate by the Austrian, Vienna-based artist Josef Dabernig.
Known for his exploration of social systems, post-wall Eastern European, brutalist architecture, conceptual austerity, and dry humor, Josef Dabernig's practice comprises film, photography, texts, objects and space-related concepts. At Lulu he will be presenting the film River Plate (2013) as well as a selection of black-and-white photographs of location shots taken for the film. Shot in black-and-white Super-16, blown up to 35mm and transferred onto HD video, the short, sixteen minute work depicts a group of seemingly unrelated people gathering and sun bathing in a river which bears the damaged traces of industrial construction under an underpass in a seemingly alpine, undisclosed European location. According to the artist: “River Plate displays a micro society in a fragmented body-narration. Knees, shoulders, feet and bellies are signifiers of articulated human presence, revealing nothing else against a claustrophobic background of cement, stone and water.” At once wry, troubling, and utterly strange, River Plate nevertheless wields an understated lyrical quality which has less do with any kind expressiveness than with a compositional rigor and beauty that strictly governs each shot.
The exhibition at Lulu is preceded by a screening of four other films by the artist and a conversation between the film curator Eduardo Thomas, Chris Sharp, co-founder of Lulu, and Josef Dabernig himself. The event, which is free, will take place on August 11th, from 7 to 9 pm at Cine Tonala.
