Lulu está muy complacido de presentar una exposición individual del artista canadiense, Paul P.
El trabajo de Paul P. habita intencionadamente en un universo muy específico y en un nexo de referencia. Su trabajo mira atrás al siglo 19, a los orígenes occidentales de la homosexualidad como una formación discursiva, y a su subsecuente florecimiento en el arte, literatura y en el lenguaje codificado debido a su estatus tabú. Como tal, en el universo de P., encontramos todo, desde un lánguido ethos del dandy inglés, al paisaje whistleriano, hacia la condenada idealización adolescente de la belleza, Tadzio, en Muerte en Venecia de Thomas Mann. Sin embargo, todo menos nostálgico, el interés de P. por este periodo, tiene menos que ver con una fetichización del mismo, que la atención que tiene por una taxonomía pictórica de tipos y codificaciones. Persiguiendo este interés, P. observa y dibuja sobre una cristalización de la pornografía homosexual de los 60s y 70s, la cual se vuelve el centro de su objeto de estudio. Es casi como si hiciera una decantación de esta historia entera y clandestina sobre los retratos extraídos de estas revistas, las cuales él retrata con una intensidad narcótica de otro mundo, aquí perfectamente, cual etéreos, encarnados en acuarelas. A través de los años, la investigación de P. de este periodo se ha expandido a incluir la escultura, en la forma de mobiliario y abstracción, entre otras cosas. Han pasado más de diez años desde que el artista ha realizado una muestra enfocada en retratos. Pero para esta exposición en Lulu, regresa a su interés central, inevitablemente incorporando en ella, su exploración del paisaje, abstracción y organización espacial, que han sido su especialidad desde entonces. Es tanto una revisión como una destilación sucinta de la práctica del artista, ofreciendo una rara oportunidad de considerar los desafíos centrales de su trabajo y su evolución en los términos más concisos.

Lulu is very pleased to present a solo exhibition of the Canadian artist, Paul P.
The work of Paul P. willfully inhabits a very specific universe and nexus of reference. It looks back to the 19th-century, western origins of homosexuality as a discursive formation and the subsequent flowering of art, literature and coded language occasioned by its taboo status. As such, in P.’s universe we encounter everything from the languorous ethos of the English dandy, to the Whistlerian landscape, to the foredoomed adolescent idealization of beauty, Tadzio, in Thomas Mann’s Death in Venice. However, anything but nostalgic, P.’s interest in this period has less to do with a fetishization thereof than it does with a pictorial taxonomy of types and codifications. Pursuing this interest, P. looks at and draws upon its crystallization in gay pornography of the 60s and 70s, which becomes the core of his subject matter. It is almost as if he telescoped this entire, clandestine history into portraits culled from these magazines, which he portrays with the narcotic intensity of the otherworldly, here perfectly, if ethereally embodied in watercolor. Over the years, P.’s investigation of this period has expanded to include sculpture, in the form of furniture, and abstraction, among other things. It has been over ten years since the artist has done a show focusing on portraits. But for his exhibition at Lulu, he returns to this core interest, inevitably incorporating into it his exploration of landscape, abstraction and spacial organization which have been his concentration since. It is both a revisitation and a succinct distillation of the artist’s practice, offering a rare opportunity to consider the central stakes of his work and its evolution in its most concise terms.
